The combination — a curated portal on top of a standardised runtime — allows a small platform team to serve dozens of product squads through well-defined self-service workflows. A developer can provision a new microservice, complete with a pipeline, a staging environment, logging, and alerting, in under ten minutes, without raising a ticket or waiting on another team. That is the tangible promise of a well-built IDP, and it is achievable today with the right investment.

Building the Business Case for a Platform Team

The challenge for senior decision-makers is justifying a dedicated platform engineering function when headcount is under pressure. The framing matters here. Platform engineering should not be positioned as an infrastructure overhead — it should be quantified as a multiplier on every product team's capacity. If a platform team of four to six engineers removes an average of half a day per week of operational friction from each of twenty product engineers, the arithmetic is straightforward. The platform team pays for itself in recovered delivery capacity before you factor in reduced incidents, faster onboarding, or improved compliance posture.

Organisations that have made this investment successfully tend to follow a few common patterns. They start with a discovery phase that maps where developer time is actually being lost — often through lightweight surveys and sprint retrospective analysis. They identify two or three high-impact friction points to address first, rather than attempting to build a comprehensive platform from day one. And critically, they treat the platform as a product: they assign a product owner, gather developer feedback regularly, and measure adoption and satisfaction alongside technical metrics. Platform engineering that is built without developer input tends to build the wrong abstractions. The teams doing this well treat internal developers as their users.

Beyond efficiency, there is a talent dimension worth considering. Senior engineers increasingly make career decisions based on the quality of the engineering environment they will work in. A well-maintained internal platform, clear golden paths, and freedom from repetitive infrastructure toil signal an organisation that takes engineering craft seriously. In a market where attracting and retaining strong engineering talent remains difficult across the UK, the platform a team works on is part of the proposition.

The shift back to dedicated platform teams is not nostalgia for the pre-DevOps era of separate ops departments. It is a recognition that scale, complexity, and the maturation of tooling have changed what good looks like. Distributed ownership remains valuable at the right layer — product teams should own their services, their deployment decisions, and their operational accountability. But the foundation those services run on benefits from deliberate, specialist attention. That is what a platform team provides.
